With more than 6,000 people in attendance, the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture is the largest annual gathering of landscape architects and allied professionals in the world. A photorealistic lawn is critical to architectural and landscape visualization. Today, we want to introduce you an easy way to create lifelike grass with only three steps.
Step 01: Set a Lawn Material
First, choose a woodland material and apply it onto the model surface.
Stretch its UV to get a dense look.
Step 02: Paint Grass Models
Then, choose a grass model to fill the lawn with the 'Scatter' tool.
Repeat the step on another kind of higher, greener grass.
Remove a bit of the lawn randomly with the Eraser tool.
You can also add some scattered fallen leaves.

HafenCity Hamburg is made by AD-Studio from Warsaw, Poland. This is a conceptual design for a vacant lot in the HafenCity area of Hamburg.
The photorealistic effects produced with D5 Render were also far superior to what could be done using Lumion. And even more impressive was the performance. The studio rendered high-resolution images at 5000 pixels in just around 6 minutes on their RTX 4090 24GB, even while processing multiple channels with D5.
The seamless integration of SketchUp and D5 also meant that the studio could use it as a core tool, saving them countless hours of effort in ensuring that the rendered results matched their design intent.
A typical design process at the studio starts with them collecting materials and inspiration from their clients, understanding their vision, and immersing themselves in client ideas.
Then, they set about familiarizing themselves with the location and surroundings with photos and tools like Google Street View. This is because in order to make decisions about weather settings, asset selection, and other aspects of scene-building that would breathe life into the project, the studio had to absorb the essence of the place.

LiveSync for SketchUp
With D5 Render 2.5, we've got some exciting news on the SketchUp-D5 workflow: LiveSync plugin for SketchUp!
No need to click the update button again and again. Your models, materials, and other changes will now sync up with D5 automatically as you tweak them in SketchUp, saving you a ton of time.
The SketchUp-D5 workflow is also powered by another feature: full-screen mode. Click the shortcut key F9 and you can start an immersive, effective design experience.
D5 Studio, the Cloud Workspace
We're thrilled to introduce you D5 Studio, a cloud workspace designed to streamline the work of designers and architects. Imagine a flexible, centralized hub where all your assets and presets are stored, ready to be used across various projects and devices. That's D5 Studio for you!
Currently, D5 Studio allows you to craft and store a variety of presets, including Environment Effect, Brush, Path, and Fill presets. You can easily use them in each project, making design and visualization a much easier and faster process.
But that's not all! D5 Studio also presents D5 Curated, a resource section filled with a growing assortment of high-quality presets. Each of these has been made by a team of gifted designers.
Get ready for the new feature we've all been waiting for: The Section Tool. With the latest D5 update, you now have the option to use either a Section Plane or a Section Cube.
Head to Menu > Preference > Widget and turn the Section tool on.
A section plane can automatically snap and align itself to the face you've selected, whether it's flat or curved, and adjusts according to the normal direction. No more hassle of manual rotation!
The "Fill" option on the right sidebar lets you paint the section surface with a color of your choice. You can tweak the filling color according to your preference.
Now, let's talk about the Section Cube. True to its name, it resembles a cube model. Using the gizmo, you can easily scale it and carve out sections of your model with the cube.
Add if you're looking to section objects only in specific layers, we've got you covered. Simply move the objects you want to section into a separate layer, navigate to "Property - Visibility on layer", and select "Current". Then, you're all set.
Advanced Camera Tool(beta)
For an enhanced design, viewing, and editing experience, the advanced camera tool is your go-to feature! You can activate it under "Preference-Widget".
Creating a picture-in-picture camera is made super easy. You can directly set it up and edit the scene as you preview it in real time. Or, you can opt to create one using the "Current Camera" option.
No more back-and-forth navigation, just a streamlined process to help you nail the perfect composition and effects.
*Every camera you craft is listed in the object list. You can easily find them with the camera filter.
The Advanced Camera Tool also offers new aspect ratio options for your creative exploration. Just select the camera you need and click the "Activate" icon. Adjustable parameters like aspect ratio, size, and more, will be at your disposal on the right sidebar. This makes it a breeze to craft vertical videos perfect for a variety of social platforms.
Optimized Video Editor
Now it’s time to talk about a substantial update in the new version, an optimized video editor for easier animation rendering.
In the past, each clip was tied to a single shot. But with version 2.5, one clip can now hold multiple shots, giving you the freedom to capture a variety of viewpoints. This way, you can have everything you need in one clip, previewing, editing, exporting, and post-production a walk in the park.
We've also given the video editing module a major boost, resulting in a drastic increase in keyframe performance. In the old version, copying keyframes from point A to B across different shots meant the character would start the walk cycle anew in each shot. But with 2.5, characters can complete their entire walk cycle across shots without having to reset.
Now, you have the power to multi/cross-select clips in a shot. This enables you to rearrange their order, effortlessly copy and paste effects, and render them together with just a single click. It's all about giving you more control and flexibility to create exactly what you envision!
Light Source Shape Display
New "Light Source Shape Display" option for point light, rect light and strip light. Enable it, and the actual sizes of the light sources will intuitively display in the viewport. So if you have slot lighting in your scene, you don't have to distinguish the emissive material in advance while modeling.
D5 SR (D5 Super Resolution), D5's self-developed super-resolution algorithm, is based on neural network super-resolution image generation algorithm and combined with multi-channel rendering feature maps. It significantly speeds up image rendering.
Optimized Operations in the Right Sidebar
The right sidebar has been redesigned. Batch parameter editings are available for paths and properties with adjustable parameters.
Optimized Three-axis Gizmo
The rotation axis of D5’s gizmo has also been optimized to avoid collisions caused by misoperation.
Model Name Display in Brush Records
In brush records, you can see the names of the models when you hover over their thumbnails, allowing you to quickly find the corresponding assets in D5 Asset Library and reuse them.
High-resolution Screen Support
D5 now has better support for high-resolution screens. The size of the interface will scale according to your screen settings, and the fonts and icons will appear clearer.
Glass Reflection in Water
D5’s water material can now reflect glasses and their reflections, enabling accurate and realistic presentation of complex light&shadow effects.
Optimized Real-time SSS Material
The real-time effect of subsurface scattering material has been significantly improved, and you can hardly see any noise in the viewport. There is a new option added to SSS material to enable skylight influence on SSS materials, further enhancing the rendering quality.
Optimized Vegetation Effects
Realistic plants are essential in architectural visualization. In this update, we have further optimized the vegetation effects, particularly in exterior scenes. The level of detail in darker areas and the light and shade effects have been enhanced, resulting in even more realistic and immersive visuals. Of course, we also ensured the consistency between real-time previews and video outputs.
Improved Clarity of Images with Resolutions over 2K
The rendering quality has also been optimized, with a noticeable improvement in clarity for images with a resolution of 2K and above.
Optimized Asset Library | Filter, Search, Material Classification
To help you conveniently find and use the assets in D5 Asset Library, we've completed the following improvements.
In addition to the existing "Dynamic" filter, we have introduced an "HD" filter to easily locate models with higher definition, which are often placed closer to the camera to enhance the overall realism of your renderings.
In the search bar, search history will be displayed for easy viewing of previous search records. Search suggestion is also supported, and you can click on the tags to directly jump to the corresponding search results.
The material classification directory has been adjusted with new classifications such as concrete, woven, SSS materials, etc.
Optimized Installation Experience
Now, downloading and installing D5 is no longer a time-consuming task.
All you need is a small 20MB package from our official website. Once launched with a simple setup process, it will automatically start downloading and installing.
In addition to D5's installation directory, you can also choose the Workspace folder for saving assets, local resources, and temporary files in the advanced settings.
In the permission settings, you have the option to choose whether to install D5 only for the current user or with administrator permissions for all users. This setting not only provides convenience for team collaboration but also ensures software security.

D5 Render has rolled out a new feature "D5 SR Image Rendering" in the latest version 2.5. "SR" stands for "Super Resolution", a D5's self-developed tech that transforms low-res images into high-res ones.
Based on neural network super-resolution image generation algorithm, D5 SR is combined with multi-channel rendering feature maps to significantly speed up image rendering.
The Super Resolution tech can be used in a wide range of applications. For instance, it can enhance the details and resolution in video rendering, and in real-time rendering, it can increase the frame rate to improve user experience.
But let's be honest, amplifying the resolution of rendered images without distortion has always been a tough nut to crack.
Highlights of D5 SR
More Realistic Reconstruction
Real-esrgan is a blind super-resolution algorithm that has not been specifically trained for D5 Render images. Therefore, when doubling the resolution of rendered images, real-esrgan may have some obvious artifacts such as unnatural materials.
Yet, this problem is well tackled with D5 SR, as you can see in the following test images. That's because D5 SR added the geometry, material, texture and other info of this object to improve the quality of reconstructed high-res images.
Zoom in to check the details. You can see that the SR algorithm without training leads to serious distortions such as blurring, smearing, or abnormal textures, while D5 SR doesn't.
When testing D5 SR at first, the twice-expanded images lost some reflection details.
After importing the info of reflection channels and materials, D5 SR can better reproduce the reflections.
You can see the difference shown in these two scenes.
Improved Rendering Efficiency
After enabling D5 SR, you will witness a boosted rendering speed for large-resolution images.
Take this scene as an example.
If rendering an image of 16K resolution (15360X8640), you will need 1h17m13s when D5 SR is off and only 27m23s after it's turned on, saving 65% of the total time.
How to Use D5 SR
Go to Menu > Preference > Widget and switch on 'D5 SR Image Rendering beta'. It will automatically work when D5 renders images with no need of any other settings.
Please note that the D5 SR algorithm is activated only on images with a size larger than 1440 x 1440 resolution.
How D5 SR was born
D5 team trains the SR algorithm with a vast collection of images generated by D5. The neural network can effectively make use of the prior information learned from this training data to give us a better high-resolution reconstruction.
However, at first we did not have enough information of 3D scenes such as geometry, materials, and textures, leading to a gap between the reconstruction and the physical rendering results. Therefore, we introduced these 3D information as input features to produce a better result.
Technically, the D5 R & D team has done the following:
First, we use high-resolution albedo and normal information to reconstruct texture and geometric features.
Then we bring in reflection, transparency, metal, and roughness info to optimize reflection and highlight effects.
To further improve the reconstruction result, we used a new algorithm. It improves the original ESRGAN neural network and uses a dual-stream network to process low-resolution original images and high-resolution channel information graphs respectively. We used relative L1 loss to enhance the supervision on pixel error and perceptual loss, and introduce adversarial loss to improve the super-resolution result.
Finally, we used U-shaped network structure to replace some Residual Dense Blocks in the ESRGAN, so as to expand the sensing field range of feature extraction of high-resolution channel information maps and further improve the inference speed.
The word may sound a bit alien to you, but I'm sure you've bumped into it in daily life.
Check out these two images below – they give you a glimpse of what caustics usually look like.
Alright, let's break it down. By definition, caustics refer to light's journey from the light source, bouncing off or bending at the specular surface (be it once or multiple times), then hitting a diffuse surface, and finally contributing to what a camera or your eyes capture.
If we were to sketch this out on an optical path analysis diagram, it would look something like this:
The light ray hits the glass bunny twice, refracts, then strikes the diffuse tabletop before finally making its way into the camera.
When will Caustics Appear?
Based on the definition of caustics, we can boil it down to three key ingredients that give rise to this phenomenon:
A light source that emits the light rays (to be exact, caustic photons);
A specular surface that reflects or refracts light (like glass, metal, and so on);
A diffuse surface that presents the caustics.
Here's a fun fact: in real life, any light can cause caustics. But in rendering engines, caustics are simulated by having the light source emit what we call 'caustic photons'.
Some "Stereotypes" about Caustics
For a long time, the vast majority of rendering software users have had two big stereotypes about caustics rendering:
The principles of caustics are abstract and require learning how to set a series of parameters.
Caustics are an "advanced" effect, thus requiring a long time to render it.
These two issues do exist. Caustics are all about how light sources and materials work together. To get caustics right, you have to fine-tune the light parameters, figure out the translucency of the material, and get the sampling parameters spot on. If anything goes wrong here, caustics won't look good. Moreover, it does take some time for caustics to settle into a noise-free result, and all rendering software are working hard to speed things up.
D5 Real-time Caustics Solution
D5 Render introduces the caustics rendering feature in version 2.5. For the headaches with caustics, D5 comes up with the following two highlight solutions:
D5 has turned those complicated caustics parameters into easy switches in the light and material panels. So, with just two clicks, you can get a nice caustics effect. No more fiddling with parameters - it's all preset and ready to go.
In D5, four basic light sources (point light, spotlight, strip light and rect light) can all emit caustics. The "custom" material can present reflective caustics, while "water" and "transparent" materials can handle both reflective and refractive caustics.
D5 Render's caustics feature is now real-time. That means the feedback between light and material is super clear and fast. No more waiting around - you see the changes as they happen.
In real-time rendering, we dial down the accuracy of caustics a bit to boost performance.
But when it comes to producing images or videos, the accuracy will be further improved, requiring more memory.
Behind the Stage
To put it simply, D5 generates real-time caustics like this:
First, it sends out photons from a light source and lets them bounce around, reflecting and refracting. It then records their position and color in space.
Next, using the position and color info of these photons, it performs scattering calculations to figure out the caustics effect in screen space.
Then, it reduces the temporal and spatial noise in the caustics effect, before finally layering it onto the image.
How to Create Caustics in D5
Take this scene as an example:
The BE WATER Lamp is made of a glass tube model with a uneven surface.
(Note: You can also create a uneven look with a normal map which affects caustics as well. )
To rotate the glass tube, you can set a keyframe animation for it in D5's video mode, or create one in DCC software and import it into D5 as an .abc file.
Then, place some light sources under the rotating glass tube and turn on their Caustics switch. After selecting the material of the glass tube, change its material template to 'Transparent' and switch on 'Caustics'.
The caustics effect will immediately appear, making the BE WATER lamp life-like.
You can adjust the Caustics Intensity and Softness parameters of the light to get the desired effect:

Use Real-World Lighting Data
Use real-world lighting data such as the position of the sun, the intensity of daylight, and the direction of shadows to create accurate lighting simulations. It's particularly easy to achieve with D5 Render's geographic sky system.
After setting the location, date and time, D5 will automatically reproduce the local lighting condition, which is a convenient way to create sunny days.
Pease note that time and north offset angle decide from which side the sun shines, thus casting shadows accordingly. It's better to have a contrast between light and shade on the building.
Use Clouds to Create a Nice Background
Imagine a serene sky with fluffy white clouds lazily drifting by, forming a picturesque scene that captures the imagination. Luckily, you can create life-like clouds in D5 with just one click.
After turning the 'cloud' option on, the sky will become rich and beautiful.
Choose an Appropriate HDRI Map
An appropriate HDRI is critical to creating different environmental lighting for a cloudy/twilight/night/... sky.
You can use the built-in HDRIs of D5 or import your own.
For example, if we want the sunset to spill over the building, choose a dim HDRI such as 'early morning' and turn down the skylight and background brightness.
Set a Proper Sun for the HDRI
If you feel the HDRI's preset sun is not an optimal choice to light up the scene, you can switch on the 'sun' option reinforce and customize the sunlight.
Please keep in mind that a proper sun direction is critical. As we've said before, it's better to rotate the HDRI and cast the sunlight from the building's side. This way, the light and shade makes the building look more solid.
Another point many neglects is that the sun needs enough height to light up the foreground. Otherwise, the scene will look dim. So, make sure to adjust the sun's altitude to a proper height.
Different from traditional offline rendering engines that require experience with node settings, D5 Render's real-time rendering feature allows users to quickly and easily adjust the environmental lighting in their 3D scenes. With real-time editing capabilities, users can experiment with different lighting setups and see the results instantly, saving time and enabling them to achieve the desired look and feel for their projects.

You can divide the project into two parts including the main site and the surrounding context.
After importing to D5 Render, separate them as two scene files. Then you and your colleague can dive into the visualization of two parts at the same time.
When completing the two parts, you can merge them into one.
How to Use Merge Project
Please first go to Menu > Preference > Widgets and turn "Merge Project" on.
After importing the divided models into D5 Render, save the scene file and create as many copies as your team needs. Then, you and your colleagues can simultaneously work on different scene files. Remember to delete irrelevant parts of each scene file and save them.
Now, you are all set to merge projects.
Go to the D5 welcome page > Recent and click the icon in the upper right corner.
Add the projects you need to merge.
Here you will see that D5 Render can merge imported models, nature models, light sources, and other D5 assets, scene lists, video clips, and render queues.
You can merge all or some of them.
Finally, choose the file path where you want to save the project and start merging.

D5 Hi for Rendering Atmosphere Previews

Without z-depth, 3D graphics would appear flat and unrealistic. In addition, z-depth is used to create depth-of-field effects, which can make images look more natural and cinematic. Overall, z-depth is an essential component of the rendering process and plays a key role in creating stunning graphics.
Luckily, D5 Render includes the z-depth channel feature to help designers achieve better visual effects.
Z-depth works on a grayscale value range, and the colors of points range from black to white based on their distance from the camera, with black being closest to the camera, white in the background, and gray in between.
In D5 Render, Z Depth is supported as a rendering effect for images or videos, and also as channel export. It's often used to add depth of field effect or to simulate fog.
How to use z-depth in D5 Render
1. As a rendering effect, Z Depth mode is available in Effect > Style.
You can use it together with the outline effect to create a stunning visual. For example, this image combines vignette, chromatic aberration, outline and z-depth.
2. For post-processing, you can export the z-depth channel map when rendering the image. It's worth noting that the z-depth rendering effect can be adjusted as a preview of the z-depth channel. After getting the satisfied distance of black and white points from the camera, you can switch off the z-depth rendering mode. The z-depth channel map will inherit this effect.
How to fake depth of field with z-depth in Photoshop
Take this rendering image and its z-depth channel as an example.
Open them in Photoshop.
Select the z-depth channel with the hotkeys Ctrl+A and copy it.
Create a new Channel named "Alpha-1" for the rendering and paste the z-depth info into it.
Click the blank space to select the RGB channel.
Select the rendering. Go to Filter>Blur>Lens Blur.
Set the Source of the Depth Map information to the "Alpha 1" channel that we created in advance.
The value range of the Blur Focal Distance is 0-255, which corresponds to the 0-255 color values of the Z-depth map. Objects with a Z-depth value of Blur Focal Distance will be in focus and will not appear blurry.
We can increase the Iris Radius to achieve a stronger depth of field blur effect (consistent with real-life experience).
Click on the Set Focal Point button and simply click on the object in the screen to define the focus, which is very intuitive and convenient.

In this article, we'll be sharing some expert tips and tricks to help you achieve the perfect interior render every time. So, sit back, relax, and let's dive into the world of interior design!
The rendering tool we use here is D5 Render, which is a free standalone real-time rendering software. You can give it a try, or use your own renderer.
Great composition can take a design from basic to breathtaking, making all the difference in the final product. In rendering, composition allows you to create a scene that is both visually appealing and realistic, drawing the viewer's eye towards the key elements of your design while maintaining a sense of balance and harmony.
Use the rule of thirds
Divide your frame into thirds and place your key elements along those lines, rather than directly in the center. The composition grid of D5 Render can do a favor. You can turn it on at Display > Option.
Pay attention to the field of view
The update of D5 Render 2.4 enables an automatic conversion between the field of view and the focal length. Put simply, the longer the focal length, the narrower the field of view, the less of the scene you can see.
It's better to avoid a wide field of view in interior rendering like 90 degrees, which could cause a distortion along the edge of view.
Consider the focal point
Choose one element of your design to be the focal point and build your composition around that. A good point is to use the depth of field which could blur the part around the focal point. This is especially helpful when you want to display a specific area or object.
Go to Camera > Depth of Field in D5 to set the effect.
When you stretch the UV of a texture, its format will look denser. So, make sure to give it a proper scale according to the actual condition. You can also switch on 'Triplanar' to get a smooth and continuous texture UV on an irregular-shaped object.
The Round Corner option could bring an obvious rounding effect at the edge of the material, making it look more realistic.
Some dirt or scratches on the surface
You can import a dirt image to the Roughness column to simulate the imperfections on the furniture surface.
Realistic lighting underlies the quality of rendering. With the advanced global illumination solution of D5 Render, interior designers can get a stunning lighting effect within a very short time.
1. Choose an HDRI for the scene when you want a particular vibe for the space.
2. To quickly create an atmospheric light and shadow, place some trees outside the window, so the sun will leave a nice projection.
1. Add a large rectangular light outside the window to cover the whole model, which can add more reflection details on the metal objects.
2. Add some strip lights in the dark corners, such as a cabinet, as accent lighting. This can make the space look more layered.
Animation with dynamic models
Animation is an advanced tool for interior designers who wants to breathe life into their scenes. So, how to acquire vivid animation? We also have some recipes.
Use dynamic assets in the D5 Asset Library.
Use the keyframe feature to make an animation of turning on a light.
For architectural visualization, environment setting is critical because it directly tells your audiences the story of the architecture. It includes sky, weather, surrounding landscape, backdrop context and many other elements. How they interact can greatly impact the realism and quality of the final render. For example, the glass facade usually reflects the surroundings. You don't need to spend hours placing buildings around to have such a beautiful reflection. All you need is a backdrop plane from D5 Asset Library.
Backdrop plane is like an entire context in one polygon. They can decorate the distant skyline, add nice glass reflections and adorn the view outside the window.
With D5 Render 2.4, new backdrop planes are updated for urban, mountainous, and wooded contexts. You can use them for architectural and interior design.
Drag and drop a backdrop plane from D5 Asset Library into the scene. With a few tweaks in a minute, you can get a stunning background for your render, which is very convenient.
How to use it
After setting the foreground, go to D5 Model Library > Landscapes. Select the backdrop plane you need and import it into the scene. Scale it properly to cover the skyline. Done! That's all you need to do.
Architectural rendering is inextricably linked to architectural photography. Architects need to tell stories about architecture through the camera so that viewers can immersively interact with the building through imaginative. If you only display the building, without adding a human touch, the design will look cold and empty.
So, how to express your design in a warm and attractive way?
We get you some most commonly used tips for setting the camera in the rendering. It is important to note that the following tips are interrelated and can be used together to better express the language of the camera.
Here we use D5 Render, a free rendering tool, as an example.
- The eye-level camera view: It is the most common sight used in architectural rendering, which corresponds to a camera height of 1.5m-1.8m in a rendering tool like D5 Render. This height simulates the effect of an architecture as seen by the human eye, which helps the realism of the rendering. At the same time, because this camera view displays a limited area, it helps architects save a lot of work in the process of architectural visualization as well.
- The aerial view: It refers to the view of a building taken from the air. The corresponding camera height depends on the volume of the building you need to show. Generally speaking, the higher the camera, the more surroundings will appear in the sight.
2. Field of View (FOV) and Focal Length
FOV decides how much of the scene we're seeing.
Focal length refers to the distance between the center of a lens or curved mirror and its focus.
They are both interrelated, and closely relevant to lens in the real world.FOV is directly determined by the Focal Length. The larger the Focal Length, the farther you can see, but the smaller the FOV.
Think about the telephoto lens and the wide-angle lens. The former has a long focal length and a small field of view, while the later is opposite. So, when you change one of the parameter, don't forget the other one.
Here's a table that can help you understand the relationship between the FOV and the focal length.

We're proud to introduce the brand new D5 GI, the updated Global Illumination solution developed by D5 Team, which is a milestone in this release.
Applying advanced algorithms including ReSTIR and Surfel, the new D5 GI ensures your smooth and stable real-time rendering experience while providing a boost in the accuracy of lighting.
One of the biggest noticeable changes is increased bounces of skylight, which leads to sufficient lighting, even deep inside an interior space.
Indirect lighting cache of high precision is supported to bring more realistic lighting transitions into the scene.
The new D5 GI retains more high-frequency details of the shadows, and tackles the problem of rendering a flat-looking scene caused by denoising.
The transmission effect of foliage is significantly improved, so that the leaves of vegetation assets will have a clearer look.
With the breakthroughs in real-time rendering effect and performance made by optimized D5 GI, the inconsistency between viewport preview and the final output is almost eliminated in this version.
Optimized emissive effect
Multiple bounces emitted from emissive materials supported, you are now able to generate precise global illumination with only emissive light sources. With the new algorithm, emissive lighting in D5 avoids completely dark corners in the scene like cornice while presenting a softer lighting effect.
The color emitted from emissive maps was previously in D5 a result of the average color of the maps. We've corrected it with the new algorithm to calculate the color of the maps with more precision, so the emissive materials give off lights accordingly. This comes in handy when applying emissive material to LED light signs or billboards.
Subsurface scattering materials, or SSS materials, are now supported to simulate translucent objects such as jade, wax and human skin.
You can use the "Subsurface scattering" material template to create real-time sss effect for the selected texture. Adjustable parameters include SubSurface Color and Scattering Intensity.
Z Depth mode is now available in Effect > Style.

Cull Distance is added in Preference > Rendering. When you specify a cull distance value for preview and output respectively, the smaller models(mainly grass and other plants) beyond that distance will not be rendered in preview or final work, as you chose.
Grass Material Blend Amount
Blend amount setting is newly added to grass material to control the blending level of the base color maps for the ground model and grass material. The larger the value, the more influence the base color map of grass has on the overall color.
2 | Optimizations
Optimized Path tool
Path Tool is also optimized to make scene building more convenient with customizable path corner nodes: curve or linear.
You can set it to Linear to draw right angles and adjust the Smoothness parameter to customize the corner angles, which helps a lot when it comes to rendering an avenue or crossroads.
For vegetation paths, we supported setting fixed spacing distance between the vegetation assets. You can use it to generate a corresponding number of models according to the spacing distance value.
Random Offset is no longer related to the length of path, so there won't be the problem of a larger actual offset distance for a relatively small offset value caused by a longer path.
Higher Output Frame Rate Options
More frame rate options are supported to bring better visual experience and more freedom in editing. You can choose from 24, 25, 30, 60, or 120 FPS for output in video rendering settings.
Note that the default frame rate options are 30 and 60 FPS. You need to go to Menu > Preferences > Widget to enable more options.
Improved Two-point Perspective View
We fixed the unexpected tilting and perspective distortion by correcting the two-point perspective algorithm, and now the animation transitions between two-point perspective and perspective view in video mode will not produce flickering.
Another change is that you would need to press F8 or P to exit the two-point perspective view now.
Group Assets & Save to Local
D5 vegetation, characters, animals, vehicles and more models can now be added to your local library and exported as .d5a models. It is also supported to group any of these assets and add them to local, so you can easily grab and use the combo in other projects.
Optimized Scatter & Hedge assets
The algorithm of vegetation scatter tool has been optimized to fill a chosen material with vegetation and avoid leaving a gap, making a lush and dense hedge look.
Scatter models with "Single series" in their names from Nature > Hedge category, set the density parameter, and check "Align to Terrain" to quickly fill the block and create realistic hedges.
Drop Models on the Ground
For models in the object list, you can now right-click on it to choose "Drop vertically" so that it lands vertically on the nearest object surface.
Check "Drop along the terrain" so when the model falls on the nearest model, it also rotates itself according to the normal of the model surface.
Camera Focal Length
A Focal Length parameter is added under Field of View which can be used as the equivalent focal length of film in real life photography.
When matching a real camera and rendering camera setting, you can align the picture information by entering the corresponding focal length value in D5. This helps you get the same view in D5 as the reference photo.
Optimized Eraser Tool
Using the eraser or clear tool, you can apply it to only a selected surface by holding the shortcut key Shift.
To make D5 even easier to get started with, Action tips are added to the lower left corner of the viewport. You can turn it on in Menu > View to see corresponding tips and shortcuts while rendering.
Clear Auto-saved Backups/Imported Models
Clearing auto-saved backups/imported models is supported in Menu > File > Clear data, to delete the backup files automatically saved and imported models (except for those already placed in the current project). This helps reduce project file size, making file storage and management easier.
D5 AutoClose after Rendering
Another update to help you with resource management is the option in rendering queue to close D5 automatically when rendering is finished.

With the development of computer graphics, architectural visualization is gradually shifted from 2D to 3D. 3D archviz is not only the display of models and materials, but also the expression of atmosphere and design concepts. Therefore, we summarize some techniques that are proven practical in real projects to help architects better deliver their ideas.
The following two projects were optimized with the techniques we will show, and you can see the change in the overall effect:
Set perspectives like in architectural photography
Architectural rendering has much to do with photography. A proper perspective can tell your audience a lot about the design and atmosphere you want to create.
There are several perspectives that you should learn how to use in archviz:
Eye-level view: This is the most common perspective that can simulate human eye sight. For rendering, you should set the camera at a height of 150-180cm.
Aerial view: This view usually displays the building as well as the surrounding context. With a proper use of this perspective, you can create stunning works.
Worm's view: a view as seen from below or from a humble position. It allows you to fit very tall subjects in the frame, such as skyscrapers.
Pay attention to glass reflections
Nowadays, glass facade is widely used in architectural design as it provides both functional and aesthetic benefits. However, in archviz projects, many people ignore the surrounding environment resulting in a very messy reflection of the glass, thus destroying the overall aesthetic.
In this project, the original glass facade reflected buildings around, and revealed harsh lighting inside the architecture. We placed a panel with a sky image on it on the opposite side, thus giving the glass a clear reflection of the sky.
Then we adjusted the transparency and roughness of the glass to a matte frosted effect. The overall vision becomes clean and fresh.
You can also use backdrop planes from the D5 Asset Library to quickly get a beautiful context.
Notice the contrast of warm and cold tones
Maintaining tonal balance is an important aspect of architectural rendering. Too cold or too warm tones can lead to visual imbalance and a flat, monotonous image.
If the overall environment seems cool, then adding some warm lighting is an ideal choice.
Surround your building with plants
Greenery is an integral part of architectural design. It not only softens the lines of the building, but also relaxes people's mood. In architectural visualization projects, we can follow the following principles to place plants:
Greenery close to the camera: shrubs and broad-leaved trees. You can increase the brightness of leaves a bit.
Greenery in between the buildings: tall trees like arbors.
Greenery far away: smaller trees with low crowns.
In this way, the greenery will form foreground, middle-ground and background for the image.
Another tip is to place warm lights under the trees to make them look soft and vivid.
Decorate the building's interior
In archviz projects, many will neglect the refinement of building interiors, resulting in a hollow, dissonant look, which is especially evident in large architectural projects. Here we provide two tips for quickly enriching building interiors:
Add lights to illuminate the building inside
Use Interior Parallaxes to decor the building windows with one click (Interior Parallax is a faux window display of decorated interior scenes)
Breathe life into your scene with animated models and particles
Nowadays, animation has become a hot trend on social media platforms. Architects are following this trend to attract more audiences. To make full use of this feature, you will need animated assets to work with it.
Yet it might be a bit difficult for individual designers or small businesses to make animation, because it's expensive to acquire both animation rendering tools and dynamic assets.
Here we recommend the rendering software D5 Render, which is free to use and has its own asset library with animated characters/plants/vehicles/particles.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Industrial Revolution profoundly influenced the whole world, changing the way humans had long been accustomed to living and building.
The great master Corbusier, along with other artists, pointed out that the traditional design industry also needed a revolution. Modernism thus began.
Mankind has been moving “Towards a New Architecture (Vers Une Architecture)” ever since.
Today, in the 21st century, we are facing another big change in the design industry: the rise of Artificial Intelligence. How to judge this new tech? Can designers find a way to work with AI? The answers are still in the air. There is no doubt that we are standing at a crossroad.
Luckily, we received an "AI-powered" architectural project created with D5 Render by the Studio of Urban Studies (hereinafter referred to as SUS), which has been approved by the client and professional architects. This project may offer some insights into the relationship between AI and designers.
We understand that designers face many challenges when turning their concepts into plans, which can result in lost or distorted ideas. To make design easier than starting from scratch yourself, we have created D5 Hi, an AI conceptual design tool for spacial design.
Studio of Urban Studies focuses on urban design. They hope to solve real issues with creative and inspiring designs.
Unlike traditional arch studios, SUS embraces new technologies to improve the efficiency and quality of their work.
The recent big-hit, design for Rain Moment Street, is a project of SUS, which aims to build a small commercial complex that is cozy to live and work in.
Rain Moment Street is like the courtyard in our memories. After a day of work, you can go downstairs and take a breath.
That's why we wanted to attenuate the sense of building volume. Rain Moment Street should break the boundary between the office building and the leisure area. Residents can see one area extend into another.
Based on this conception, we had multiple choices to create the facade. After rounds of discussion, we finally used Stable Diffusion.
3 AI + D5: the productivity tool kit of the new era
SUS integrated AI into their workflow by first producing 2D images with AI, then modeling and rendering accordingly.
Sketch production | Why AI
Usually, there were no clear objectives at the beginning of the project. Thus, after generating a large number of sketches, SUS made constant adjustments to see if there would be more possible design plans.
During this process, an architect first drew a rough sketch and then gave AI some prompts to create many similar works.
Yet not all of them were practicable. So the architect had to choose some feasible sketches and gave AI more prompts to optimize their light and shadow. Meanwhile, tags of master architects will be added as a reference for the architectural style.
There was trial and error at this stage before the designer could confirm the architectural volume including concave or convex, curved or straight lines, and so on.
Move on to fine-tune the prompt and try different CFG Scale* and Denoising Strength*. This would produce images of various design styles. The architect chose an appropriate one from them and made inpainting on some important or unsatisfactory details.
For example, the roof of Rain Moment Street was inpainted to have a look of a hollow net-like form resembling dragon scales.
The CFG scale adjusts how much the image looks closer to the prompt and/ or input image.
Denoising strength controls how many changes it will make compared with the original image.
At this point, the design had taken shape, but the image was limited to a size of 512 x 512. SUS extended it to supplement the rest part.
Modeling and visualizing | Why D5
Now it came the time to turn the AI-generated sketch into 3d models. Since the sketch was complete and concrete, it didn't take much time to build the models. Architects could add more details as well.
For the part of visualization, SUS chose D5 Render as the ultimate tool.
At first, they had other selections. But after the further experience, D5 became their go-to tool for some special reasons.
The ray-tracing technology used by D5 is especially helpful when SUS wants to quickly build an atmospheric environment for the building.
For one thing, D5 Render adopts PBR texturing system, which is also used by the mainstream DCC software. The one-click material sync feature builds a streamlined workflow for architects and designers. For another, designers can import assets from Bridge into D5, which helps them conveniently enrich the surrounding context.
The models built by SUS are often full of details, such as curtain wall frames, expansion joints, and openings, which resemble their look in the real world. So, the large file is usually split for several architects to model at the same time.
Yet the split parts have to be merged in the rendering software, leading to many times of model sync. It is troublesome in other software, yet not the case in D5 Render. D5's one-click sync feature allows each model sync to save ten seconds or more. Think about thousands of times of sync in a project and you'll see how much time D5 has saved for SUS.
Rain Moment Street becomes a big hit not only because of the involvement of Artificial Intelligence but also because its animation render is superb.
SUS talked about how they viewed archviz in the interview:
We hope to produce an architecture design, not only the archviz but also the real building, that audiences can experience as immersively as in a movie.
There is another stronger connection between AI and archviz:
SUS will select the form of visualization based on the image atmosphere generated by AI.
"AI created some art-like images with a settled color tone, vibe, and composition. Yet the process to find these styles requires manual operation. So, there should be a tool that comes in handy to solve this issue."
This might be the first time D5 met AI, but not the last time.
5 The future
Just as the pioneers of modernism faced changes at that time, we stand at the crossroads of a new revolution in science and technology.
Designers have lived through the days of drawing with pencil and ruler, the era of CAD replacing tablets, and are now experiencing a shift from 2D to 3D, and the gradual involvement of AI in the project.
Although each technological innovation brings about a debate about the "survival" and "extinction" of designers, in retrospect, there are always people who embrace changes, master new tools and improve productivity.
SUS and D5 believe that AI is only a tool, and designers are the masters. SUS also mentioned an interesting phenomenon:

Architects should be familiar with the whole workflow including planning principles, codes, construction, and other knowledge. Without enough experience, you can't master AI and make the right choice of solutions. In this case, the design will be empty and boring. Don't turn your design into a black box driven by AI. Don't be lazy. Otherwise, you'll suffer the consequences.
